Reverse Osmosis FAQs
-
Under sink water filtration systems are installed underneath your sink to filter your drinking water. They typically offer more in-depth filtration than faucet-mounted water filters. For under sink water filters, you can choose to install a second tap for your filtered water, or, with Culligan’s unique ClearLink PROTM technology, you can switch from filtered to non-filtered tap water with the press of a button.
-
In reverse osmosis water filtration, water flows across a tightly woven membrane that separates the water from contaminants as small as a single atom. Typically, the reverse osmosis process is combined with multiple other stages of filtration including a sediment filter, carbon filtration, and additional speciality filtration stages.
-
You can get a virtually unlimited supply of cleaner, safer, better-tasting water right from the tap. With multiple stages of filtration, these systems are one of the most comprehensive ways to treat your water for a wide variety of potential problems.
-
The lifespan of your filter depends on a number of factors including how much water you use, your local water quality and the specific RO system you choose. Regularly replacing your filters will help ensure your system is running at full capacity. Some filters should be changed annually, but others can last up to two years. The reverse osmosis membrane should be checked annually and typically lasts three to five years.
-
Reverse osmosis filters contaminants from water by forcing them through a semipermeable membrane. Some of these contaminants include lead, mercury and chromium, among many others.
-
Reverse osmosis water filtration systems can target many contaminants, including arsenic, chlorine, lead, and PFAS. Some of these require specific filters to be included within the system, so make sure to find a system that can address the problems you’re most concerned about. Your Culligan water expert can help you understand the best solution for your home during your free consultation.
-
Basic water filters typically use carbon-based filtration to address aesthetic concerns (like taste and smell) and a small number of water concerns, like chlorine. However, they don’t filter out most major contaminants like lead, bacteria, PFAS (“forever chemicals”), microplastics and others. With Culligan’s most advanced reverse osmosis systems, your water follows a multi-stage filtration process that targets more than 90 contaminants – 18 times more than the leading standard filter pitcher.*
* Aquasential RO and Smart RO when configured with post-filter and Total Defense cartridge. -
Culligan whole home water filters are designed to address specific water problems that tend to impact the whole home – drinking, bathing, cleaning, laundry and more. These targeted systems can address issues including PFAS (“forever chemicals”), iron, hydrogen sulfide (which causes a sulfur smell), chlorine, sediment, pH levels (acidity) and arsenic.
-
A reverse osmosis system gives you a virtually unlimited supply of filtered water right from your faucet. Benefits of this type of advanced filtration include comprehensive protection against a broad range of contaminants, plus the convenience of great tasting water on tap and optional smart features that can offer filter change alerts, contaminant reduction tracking and more.
-
While specific maintenance requirements may depend on the system you choose, you’ll need to change filters every 1-2 years to help ensure your system is running at top performance. The reverse osmosis membrane should also be checked annually and typically lasts three to five years.
-
Culligan reverse osmosis systems use your home’s water pressure to power the multistage filtration process, so they don’t require energy for their core function. However, a minimal amount of energy is used by systems that offer smart features, like our Aquasential® Smart Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filtration System.
